Jules Brunet was an French army officer, who was part of the group of military advisors of Napoleon III. Sent to Japan 1867, he helped to modernize the army of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the last Shogun. After the Boshin War the French military was ordered to leave Japan, but Brunet chose to remain and to fight with Enomoto Takeaki against the imperial forces. Brunet never wore a Shogun uniform, he was known as the French samurai.
